The Mesonychians were a unique clade of Ungulates related to Artiodactyls that were unique among hooved animals in being a largely carnivorous family. Many of their adaptations for such a lifestyle are reflected in their superficially carnivoran-like appearance. Mesonychids ranged from small, mink-like semi-aquatic predators, wolf-sized and wolf-like pursuit predators, and large bear-like forms such as Harpagolestes; one of the largest of the Mesonychians. Harpagolestes had powerful jaws and teeth that were ideal for crushing hard foodstuffs, such as bone and tendon. This species lived during the Late Eocene of Korea, hence the species name.
